I would like to take a moment and comment on what a great grading / testing was conducted yesterday at our school in Windsor. It was a small grading, but everyone worked very hard and just did a great job!

The Black Belt grading is fast approaching, and naturally this tends to get more attention. However this is the goal everyone is looking towards. There are many exciting things coming in our school over the next few months. In the post below this one, the Victoria Day Holiday post is a optin for our school newsletter and mailing list. Please consider signing up!

Again congratulations to all the successful graduates yesterday! Keep up the great work!

The “art” of Learning

By Master Art Mason | News

Man in white kimono and black belt training karate over gray background.

There is an old Zen story of two monks walking through a village after a very heavy rain. As they are walking they see a beautiful woman standing on a corner looking to cross the road. She is wearing a beautiful long dress down to the ground. She is trying to cross the muddy road with all the water on it. The older monks walks over to her, picks her up and carries her across the road There he puts her down and rejoins the younger monk. As they are walking the younger monk is visibly upset, and so after time the older monk asks why….

The younger monk states, “we are monks, we are not allowed to touch a women, yet you picked this woman up and carried her. ” The older monk says, “yes this is correct.” The younger monk again, even more emphatically restates his opinion and concern. The monks is silent for a moment and then states. “yes I picked her up and helped her cross the road, but why are you still carrying her?”

This is how we all are at times, we dwell on things that are just not important. And this is the reason why so many people will “quit” training. “I am no good, I make too many mistakes.” We all makes mistakes, god knows how many I have made in my learning process and still do! There have been countless times I have messed something up on the floor, laughed and just did it again! We are not our mistakes, but they help us grow and learn. Without them, without all our errors, we would not develop and grow.

“The Art of Learning” is the “Art of Learning to Laugh”

, laugh at your mistakes, your screw-ups and even your victories.

Always remember, a Black Belt is just a White Belt who never quit.

I just wanted to take a moment and congratulate all the successful people who graded this past weekend for new belt ranks, and to those successful black belt who passed their pre-test exams.

Grading is such an important part of your training. At first it can make you very nervous, but over time the nerves change and become a positive energy to drive you to new levels! I remember many of my different tests and promotions. They are all part of a very exciting journey.

Black Belt grading weekend is fast approaching too. Check with your teachers to make sure you have everything in order. Also get you application papers in asap. It will be quite the exciting time!

Always a White Belt

By Master Art Mason | News

Hands tightening white belt on a teenage dressed in kimono for martial arts

Do you live in your comfort zone? Most people do! When they think of leaving that zone they are hit by all kinds of anxiety and then return to their easy chair, which is not always easy. It seems today that more and more people are programmed for failure. Why try, it won’t happen anyways is the mantra.

But that is all wrong! The best parts of life comes when you are out of your comfort zone! This is one of the great benefits of training in the martial arts, you have to step out of your comfort zone and expand! Plus, a real martial artist knows he is never truly a master, always a student and accepts that life is about how many white belts you can wear!

I started martial arts training almost 32 years ago. Before that I QUIT EVERYTHING I did. But this was different. I was determined to succeed. Doing this made me realized how much I love the white belt experience. You can too! But how do you start? The first thing to look at, to get out of this comfort zone is your opinion of yourself. If this is bad, and I am sure it is, then you wont move. So here is a little help.

First read the book Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwelll Maltz. This will help you to look at yourself differently. This book is the foundation of all self improvement, as well as getting out of that comfort zone! Next take a look at Lee Milteers work, she is an amazing author and has a way of reaching you, looking at the world in a very positive way. Here books and motivational abilities will get you moving in the right direction, as long as you take action.

So am I talking with experience or am I talking out of my ass? Here are some of the things I have done out of my comfort zone.

  1. Joined a martial art school
  2. Testing in front of people
  3. Doing demonstrations in front of people
  4. Teaching, I was terrified of public speaking.
  5. Opened my own school despite being told I would fail
  6. Quitting a $32 an hour job at Chrysler to run a school full time
  7. Taking other arts and again becoming a beginner
  8. Traveling to teach
  9. Moving to Europe to open another school
  10. Learning a new language
  11. Writing and publishing books

There is more, but you get the point. Am I trying to impress you? No I am trying to impress UPON YOU that anything is possible. I am not an exception, and I should be the norm. Become a WHITE BELT IN LIFE.

Just come in and TRAIN….

By Master Art Mason | News

ArtJune2000 Martial Arts is not something that you do, it is something that you become. When you first begin your training things are very new and very exciting. Each belt promotion means more to you then as an adult you are willing to admit. You stare with joy at the piece of tape around one side of your belt. It feels so good!

You have a definite goal, to get that coveted Black Belt. The journey is long and hard and requires dedication, commitment and a ton of perseverance. After the years pass your view begins to change. TRAINING becomes part of life, like getting up in the morning. You have become a martial artist. Training is like air.

The meaning of rank in the arts changes for you. You no longer revel in each little step, or for that matter even in dan ranks as they go by. Suddenly the knowledge becomes the most important, you develop a thirst for more.

When people leave the arts for whatever reason, it never leaves them. It is not just in your blood, it becomes your blood. You see the world in a different prospective then ordinary people do. And martial arts people are not ordinary people.  One of my senior students and master teacher Riccardo Pappini said to me one day in regard to people who stop training for one reason or another, “you can never come back to training, you just train.”

Truer words could never have been said. Forget New Years resolutions, just come in the door and train! Are you worried you forgot your patterns??? Just some in and train. Are you out of shape? Just come in and train.

Need a little more encouragement?? Read this.

But for the moment, JUST COME IN AND TRAIN…….It is WHO YOU ARE!!!!

Pressure Point Certification Course

By Master Art Mason | News

NewCrest Dear Students,

Have you ever had difficulty getting your self defense techniques to work on larger, strong opponents? Does it frustrate you when others do it so easily? Would you like to know the ancient secrets of the Masters, and why everything is so easy for them?

I you feel that I way understand, I have felt that way before too. I spent years working on techniques that I just could not get to work on a consistent basis, and never against larger, stronger partners. Then I discover the art of Kyusho Jitsu.

What is Kyusho Jitsu? Kyusho is the art of the pressure point system of the human body. Based on Chinese Medicine and the 12 meridian of the body, Kyusho teaches you how to manipulate the pressure points of the body to get the maximum result, with less effort in all your techniques.
How do you learn Kyusho Jitsu?

Kyusho Jitsu is only touched upon in our classes, but anyone who would like to learn and certify in this amazing art can do so by attending a 12 month course, held at our Windsor School each month.
What advantages are there for you in learning more about Kyusho?

• It will make your techniques work every time!
• Smaller students will be able to make techniques work on large opponents
• Older students will feel younger because Kyusho is a science applied to your art, without stress.
• As you study it will help keep you light years ahead of your piers.
• Teaches you how to really use your patterns!
• Find the ‘Hidden Secrets’ inside your patterns.

How do you get started?
Easy! Our Beginners Kyusho Pre-College Course being held on Friday December 18th at 7:30pm. This workshop is open to all adult students, regardless of rank. At this pre-college you will learn some Kyusho basics as well as get all the information on the upcoming certification course starting in January 2016. Don’t miss out! This will be the last opportunity for a year.

Yours in the arts,
