“It is the journey is what brings us happiness not the destination.”. Dan Millman
Martial arts is a way of life, it is not something you do for fun or entertainment. There are people who do, and typically they don’t last very long. Some who begin the study do so for the reasons of entertainment, something to do to get in shape, but many change their way of thinking over time.
We set goals which is important, but the true joy come in the training needed to reach those goals. I have beautiful memories of my time as a Coloured Belt, working so hard to prepare for the time I would reach Black Belt. I miss those days! Each new belt or stripe was a fork in the road and choices needed to be made.
The quote at the top is from Dan Millman author of the book “Way of the Peaceful Warrior.” Now depending on how long you have known me you would know that when the decision for the name of the school came along I have never heard of this #1 Best Seller. After about a year Dan contacted me and we became friends. he is an awesome and very inspirational man. I strongly suggest reading his books, this one in particular.
So what are these forks in the road I speak of? For me it was to become a teacher. Then I could share and expand the knowledge I gained that truly changed the direction of my life! For others it is competition, still more perhaps community service, or training law enforcement.
The possibilities are endless.
In 2004 I was at a martial arts conference in Orlando Florida. One of the presenters Grand Master Stephen Hayes asked the audience if they could have 10 million dollars, but they had to go back in time and not become involved in the martial arts would they take the money and lose the knowledge. In a room of about 100 people I guess there was only one person said yes. That is the influence is has on us.
So what am I saying?? Students, get in the Dojo or Dojang next class and TRAIN. Everything else can wait. For those who stopped, well there is no quitting as it is in your blood, so get in the Dojo and train. Just train, that is the path and the all that is needed.
